Field note 05 · The notebook

A light record: colour, reflections and a personal impression

Keep a visual exercise separate from measurements and practical advice.

Three areas of colour

Choose water, sky and shoreline, if visible. Describe their appearance in approximate words. Screen settings, light and editing affect the image. The exercise follows relationships in the frame; it is not a method of evaluating water conditions or identifying a location.

An impression in its own line

Write what the scene brings to mind, but label it as personal. Do not invent the time, weather or experience of being there. A photograph can be evocative without requiring a story that its source does not confirm.

Keep the original

Save the photographer and page with the note. For your own image, record the context you actually know. One distinct picture with an honest caption can be more useful than a large album of similar views that have lost their dates and origins.
